 What is HIIT and why you should try it

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a type of workout that alternates short periods of intense exercise with periods of rest or active recovery. The intense exercise periods usually last 20-60 seconds, and the rest or active recovery periods can range from a few seconds to a few minutes. HIIT workouts can be done using a variety of exercises, such as running, cycling, jumping jacks, or burpees.



One reason to do HIIT is that it can be a time-efficient way to improve fitness and burn calories. Because the intense exercise periods are so challenging, your body continues to burn calories at an increased rate even after the workout is over. This is known as the "afterburn effect" or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), and it can last for up to 24 hours after the workout.





HIIT has also been shown to improve cardiovascular health, increase endurance, and improve insulin sensitivity. In fact, some studies have suggested that HIIT may be more effective than steady-state exercise at improving cardiovascular fitness and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes.


Finally, HIIT can be a fun and challenging way to mix up your workouts and push your limits. It can be done with little or no equipment, making it a great option for exercising at home, and it can be modified to fit your fitness level and goals. However, because of the intensity of the workouts, it is important to start slowly and work up to longer or more challenging workouts over time.
